What is a perm? A perm is the process that consists of waves and curls into the hair. Perms work by using chemicals to change the hair texture; to either wavy or curly. Just like any other hair transformation, Perms need to have daily maintenance and upkeep for your curls to stay fabulous. Hearing the word “upkeep” and “maintenance” may sound like a lot of work and burning a hole in your wallet, but these tricks and tips are fairly simple and won’t hurt the bank!

- First things first, Your hair should be in good condition
If your hair is too damaged, stylist will recommend on not getting a perm. Overly damaged hair can cause the curls to not come out pretty. If your hair is overly processed, damaged or dry, wait until your hair is healthy again and reconsider getting a perm then! - Don’t wash it during the first 72 hours
This is a crucial step in maintaining your perm curls. Once your perm is completed, your stylist will go over how long to not wash it for. - Avoid any chemical treatments before and after
After getting a perm, you should not dye your hair for at least a month. Coloring your hair before a perm is a big NO and can cause damage and weaken the strands. - Don’t straighten your hair too often
If done often, blow drying, flat ironing will mess up your beautiful curls! This will cause frizzing and an uneven texture. Don’t get a perm if you’re not 100% committed to having curly hair. - Deep Conditioner is your new best friend
Applying deep conditioner to your hair can help prevent damage. Condition well and often to avoid this hair disaster. Along with conditioning and deep conditioning, using the right shampoo and other hair products will benefit your perm lasting longer and being healthy. - Trim hair regularly
Going to the salon for regular trims are key to maintaining bouncy and better defined curls. Trims will also help you maintain the ideal shape and will help avoid periods in which the hair will puff up in the wrong places; which can cause split and damaged ends. Having your hair trimmed is a haircut and deep condition treatment all in one!
